The office was quiet except for the receptionist, Serena, who smiled as Eva came in.

“Charlie got a hold of you, I see?”

“She did,” Eva said, smiling back at the young woman. “What do I need to do?”

“Over here,” Serena said, pointing to an empty computer station. “There’s a questionnaire that she usually has clients fill out, but since you’re the closest thing to a client we have, I think you’re supposed to do it.”

“I’ll get right to it,” Eva said. And she did.

There were questions ranging from what Eva had known about Sal when she was a child to what she’d heard about him from others. Part of her felt a little odd mentioning the things that Sarah had shared with her, but again she figured that Sarah would want the truth to come out, no matter what.

Some of the questions were nearly impossible for Eva. Either she couldn’t remember the answers, or they were concerning things she knew nothing about. Hopefully, with the information she’d given, Charlie could make some additional progress.

At the end of the questionnaire, she noticed a comments section, and promising herself she was going to reach out to Sarah the moment she was done, she put down the young woman’s cell number and left a note saying that Sarah may have more information.

“Done,” Eva said, leaning back.

“You can press send at the top there,” Serena said. “Thanks for getting to it so quickly. Time is of the essence. Then again, when isn’t it in our line of work?”

Eva had to agree, time was a commodity they couldn’t gain more of, but at the same time she also felt a deep warmth seep through her at the woman’s words. Our line of work. Yes, this was exactly the line of work she wanted to be in. Perhaps she appreciated that more now after having lost sight of that at one point.

It was funny, knowing that she loved—and enjoyed—her job at the bed-and-breakfast, but for a while now she’d considered stepping into something else. Whether it was adding a second B&B on the other side of town—there was one for sale that she’d had her eye on—or maybe something more drastic. Something like becoming a private investigator.

Then Jerome had come along, and look where he’d all but pushed her. To follow her dreams.

Jerome! She needed to share the news she’d learned with him, but something held her back from calling. There was still her time at the agency to make it through before she would be free, and she needed to do some additional digging on the new characters they had uncovered at the college.

Sending off a quick text to Elijah for images of the notes he’d taken, Eva moved to the desk she’d been using and got to work. She had various tasks from cases the agency was already working on, things that she’d promised to get done first, so as she waited for Elijah, she did those things.

When his images finally came through on her phone, she was about ready to dig into the Brandon case and their timing had been perfect.
